Needless to say, booking a surf trip to France is a rite of passage for people from all over the world. But to get the most out of your experience, you first need to know when the best time to book is. So, let’s get real here for a second. We’re going to tell you a little secret about learning to surf in France. Ready?

Ok.

The truth is that the best time to book a surf trip to France depends on what you’re looking to get out of the experience. The reason being that France and in particular Hossegor has waves all year round, which means you could essentially roll up to our surf house and surf camp in Hossegor on a whim and still score good waves.

But here’s something to consider.

Your idea of ‘good waves’ may be different to someone else’s who’s been surfing for a few years.

For example; on one hand we have guests who love sunny days and afternoons spent watching the sun set over a cobalt ocean that aren’t particularly phased about catching the swell of the year. On the other hand, there are those who prefer to take on the thickest Hossegor freight trains they can paddle into and get kegged off their melon with only a few other people in the water.

Essentially, the best time for you to book a surf trip or surf camp in Hossegor will depend on whether you see yourself as a happy-go-lucky beginner or a hardcore tube hound. If it’s the former that you relate to, you’ll be better suited to smaller waves and a more social learn to surf experience.

This means Hossegor during the warmer months will be right up your alley. We’re talkin’ late May, June, July, August and September; months of the year with weaker swells and 20°C plus daytime temperatures.

If, however, you consider yourself a bit of a shred lord on the planche de surf, you’re gonna want to stay at Southwest Surf House and surf Les Bourdaines when your chances of catching a decent swell are high, sideways rain and bitter cold be damned!

This means your surf trip to France will most likely take place during the colder months when powerful mid-Atlantic storms hurl swell after swell smack bang into our coastline. With that in mind, plan on booking towards the end of September or from November through to early May. Just don’t forget to pack a wetsuit.

So, to break it all down for you. You can book a surf trip to France or a surf camp in Hossegor pretty much all year round. You’d be pretty unlucky not to get a few epic sessions in. But it really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for and your skill level.

As always, Southwest Surf House is more than happy to help you with any questions you may have about surfing in Hossegor, learning to surf in France or our surf camp in Hossegor, so reach out if there’s something you’d like to ask.
