At the Surf House, we understand how vital the ocean is—not just to surfers but to the wider community. Spending time in the water brings immense joy, but it also makes us acutely aware of the environmental challenges our oceans face, from garbage waste to microplastics. Conservation and restoration are no longer optional—they’re essential.
We’re not perfect, but we believe in progress over perfection. Sustainability is a journey, and we see it as an opportunity to innovate, learn, and make meaningful change. This year, we’ve made significant strides in reducing our environmental footprint while promoting health and well-being. Here’s how we’re turning our goals into action.
Sustainable Food Practices: From Seed to Table
At the heart of our sustainability efforts is a complete redesign of our food systems. By sourcing ingredients locally and embracing circular practices, we’ve created a model that benefits the planet, our guests, and the local community.
We’ve partnered with Jardin Fleurs de Vie, a local organic farm, to grow much of the produce used in our kitchen. We’re especially excited about our dedicated patch of land at the farm, where we can see our food flourish from seed to table. We’ve also built relationships with bakers like Le Pain d’Ici and brewers like Mucha Kombucha, who share our passion for sustainability and healthy living.
Our circular food system ensures every step minimizes waste and maximizes positive outcomes:
• Organic Farming: It all starts at the farm, where organic practices avoid harmful pesticides and fertilizers while optimizing water and soil use.
• Local Delivery: Sourcing locally reduces transportation emissions and the need for excessive packaging, shrinking our carbon footprint.
• Plastic-Free Packaging: We’ve eliminated single-use plastics, prioritizing reusable or compostable materials.
• Waste Reduction in the Kitchen: Our chefs ensure minimal food waste while creating delicious, nutrient-rich meals.
• Composting: In 2023, we launched a composting system to turn kitchen scraps into fertilizer for our veggie garden, closing the loop on waste.
By focusing on every stage of the food cycle, we’re creating a system that supports the health of the planet, our guests, and the local economy.
Well-Being for People and Planet
The Surf House is about balance: spending time in the ocean, sharing great meals, and connecting with like-minded people. Over the years, we’ve seen the incredible effect this has on our guests—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
This year, we’re taking an extra step by eliminating harmful chemicals and switching to organic, fragrance-free products throughout the Surf House. This helps protect both the environment and the well-being of our guests.
Our focus on high-quality, seasonal, and nutrient-dense food not only fuels our guests for active days in the water but also aids in recovery. Guests often love discovering that their meals come from a local farm, and many leave with new habits and inspiration to make sustainable changes in their own lives.
Building a Stronger Community and Protecting the Ocean
Our sustainability efforts ripple beyond our walls. By supporting local farmers, bakers, and artisans, we strengthen the local economy and foster a sense of community. These partnerships build trust, promote transparency, and create opportunities for everyone involved.
At the same time, improving land-based practices like farming and waste management tackles the root causes of ocean degradation. Healthy land leads to healthier seas—a belief at the core of everything we do. By focusing on these upstream solutions, we’re not just mitigating harm; we’re creating a positive impact.
Looking Ahead
Within just one year, we’ve seen incredible progress. From redesigning our food systems to eliminating harmful chemicals, we’re committed to staying consistent and expanding our efforts in 2025 and beyond.
We invite you to watch this space, join us on this journey, and be part of the change—whether as a guest, a collaborator, or someone looking for inspiration to make their own impact. Together, we can create a healthier planet, stronger communities, and a brighter future for our oceans.
